Photo gallery

OK, you guys had a lot of fun with the photo of my Polish relatives, so here's another one to talk about. This photo was taken by my father with a Polaroid camera at a party in our basement in October 1961. The 12-year-old girls here are trying to avoid being photographed. Aside from how different their attire is from what pre-teens wear today, what I like about this shot is the kitsch in the background - how 1950s! And how about the returnable glass Coke bottle. (This one did not make it into the book.)

Somebody would probably pay $100 for that ceramic cow these days.

Did they have to get a second mortgage to buy a polaroid camera in 1961?

Good lord, I can't recall the last time I saw 12-year-old girls wearing dresses. But this picture reminds me that in 1962, our junior high school decreed that if a girl wore nylons, she had to wear dress shoes because to wear nylons with tennis shoes (which was the rage) was "too provocative." If worn, tennis shoes had to be worn with bobby socks. So, if you're looking to pinpoint the beginning of the decline of western civilization ...

that's a steer, not a cow.

Cow is a generic word for any bovine.

In parts of sub-saharan africa, "cow" refers to any milk producing cattle...

goat, camel, sheep, buffalo... all go by whatever the native word for cow is... they might put a qualifier in there... hump cow, little cow, wide cow, curly cow...

Cows that make the milk used in Swiss Cheese production are Holy Cows...

I'm sorry. Really.

All I can say is, holy cow!

Are now female whales called cows as well? Or whalettes?

Just so you know... I sat here staring at your response for a good half minute while I filtered through all of the "call her mom, call her your wife, what's your wife's name, does your sister know you talk about her like that, that's no way to talk about your wife, etc"

LoL- and yes, female whales are cows :-) :-) :-)
